Install GNOME Shell in Ubuntu 11:10
GNOME Shell (shell) is the standard interface of the GNOME desktop environment starts from the GNOME 3. 11:10 Ubuntu has been using GNOME 3 by default, and still use Unity as the default shell. However, if your computer has standard specifications below, you can use Ubuntu 2D (Unity 2D) as a fallback mode.
Fallback mode on Ubuntu using GNOME 3 11:10 still with minimum effect to support computers with low graphics and classic GNOME-based GNOME 2.3.x has been removed. So, if you want to try GNOME Shell in Ubuntu 11:10, you do not have to worry that the GNOME Shell will clash with the Unity, as it does in Ubuntu 11.04 is due to Ubuntu 11.04 still use GNOME 2.3.x
After you finish installing Ubuntu 11:10 you can directly install the GNOME Shell from the Terminal or Ubuntu Software Center for GNOME Shell is available from the official repositories.
Install GNOME Shell in Ubuntu 11:10
Open a terminal (press Ctrl-Alt-T), and run the following command:
sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
You can also install GNOME Shell from the Ubuntu Software Center, you can use the search facility; gnome shell to find the name of the package, and click Install.
Completed.
When finished installing GNOME Shell, restart Ubuntu to go into session GNOME Shell.
At 11:10 the Ubuntu login screen has been installed GNOME Shell you’ll find a menu like this:

- Classic GNOME: Ubuntu with the classic interface, has a top and bottom panels, similar to the default display Ubuntu 10.10.
- GNOME Classic (No effects): Same with the look of GNOME Classic.

- 2D Ubuntu: Ubuntu with an interface similar to standard 11:10 Ubuntu but with a minimal effect. Also known as Unity 2D.

way is to click the Activities menu (left-top) select the Applications menu, then select an application that would be added, such as Banshee, right-click on the Banshee icon and select Add to Favorites like this:
